Great Reception for the ‘Manuscript Illumination Techniques’ Workshop

The ‘Manuscript Illumination Techniques’ Workshop at the University of Jaén (UJA), taught by specialist Francisco Gutiérrez, was very well received by the public. This artist is a graduate of the University of Jaén, specializing in artistic calligraphy and the illumination of historical manuscripts.

This workshop, integrated into the FoCo (Complementary Training) program, was part of the activities parallel to the ‘Missal of Cardinal Merino’ exhibition, which can be visited until February 17. Also included among these parallel activities are the 3 lectures that have been held within the ‘Encounters with Culture’ series and which are available in the UJA.Cultura YouTube repository.

The great reception this Workshop received from the university community and Jaén society led the Vice-Rectorate for Cultural Outreach and Sports to decide to hold two workshops instead of the single one originally planned. In the various sessions, over 6 days, Francisco Gutiérrez analyzed traditional techniques in ornamentation on parchment, using natural pigments and 24-karat gold leaf.

In 2008, Francisco Gutiérrez, who holds a degree in Art History from the University of Jaén, began his studies as a Calligrapher at a school for artisans in Lisbon, Portugal, and continued his training with various renowned Spanish calligraphers. In 2013, he entered the only European center specializing in the Artistic Creation of Illuminated Manuscripts, ISEEM (European Institute for Illumination and Manuscripts) in Angers, France. In 2015, he created ‘Scriptorium Yayyan’, a company specializing in Artistic Calligraphy and Illumination of historical manuscripts dedicated, since then, to providing training and artistic creation.
